I am thrilled about the 9-piece band and the incredibly talented vocalist, Brian Owens, that band leader, Jeff Anderson, has assembled to perform the music and arrangements of Marvin Gaye and Bobby Scott. Brett Stamps, Professor Emeritus of Music at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, is the trombone player in the band, Eric Slaughter, a master guitarist from St. Louis, is also part of the ensemble and both are credited with transposing the Bobby Scott arrangements for this Gaye-Scott Collaboration. Some musicians will take part in a panel discussion immediately following the concert, hosted by Associate Professor Emeritus Prince Wells III of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Department of Music. You can find more information about these talented individuals in the blog section on this website www.jazznmysoul.com.
All proceeds go to the Haven of Grace (more than a place) sponsored by The Steward Family Foundation.

MARVIN GAYE - WHY DID I CHOOSE YOU (THE BITTER END SHOW)
For my play Jazz in My Soul: A Marvin Gaye Fantasy, I imagined what kind of concert Marvin Gaye might have performed to showcase his Bobby Scott arrangements. I envisioned him revisiting his 1960s hits for the longtime fans who had been with him from the beginning, but also reimagining some of those songs within the jazz genre—perhaps featuring horn and piano solos throughout. The Gaye-Scott Collaboration Band did not disappoint.
The turning point for me came when I watched Brian perform "The Shadow of Your Smile." I was absolutely floored. Just like many of you who attended on Sunday, September 22nd, I was experiencing Brian’s interpretations of these songs for the first time. I closed my eyes, as I often do when I want to lose myself in the music. And in that moment, as his voice washed over me, Brian wasn’t just singing Marvin’s songs—he was Marvin.
This is the Marvin we are hoping to capture in our play, Jazz In My Soul "A Marvin Gaye Story", Marvin in all his sweetness, pitch perfect and deliciously irresistible. Here he is live with an incredibly touching tribute to Tammy Terrell, "If This World Were Mine" and "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing". This medley has made it's way into our play. Your Lady Edie B. (RSVP (rare songs, very personal) On-air Sunday night 4-14-24. As part of her "April, the Month of Marvin" series, Lady Edie B. shared with her jazz audience a 7-year-old interview featuring Mickey Stevenson, the First A&R Man for Motown Records, In the interview Mr. Stevenson talks about his first encounter with the iconic R&B singer Marvin Gaye.
As part of our April, The Month of Marvin series, here's an on-air audio grab of Edie's interview with one of the long-time sound engineers for R&B legend Marvin Gaye, Mr. Art Stewart. I had been doing research for my play that is now complete, "Jazz in My Soul-a Marvin Gaye Fantasy," Mr. Stewart was able to provide me with precious information for this project, and like Mickey Stevenson, whom I had interviewed a few weeks prior, became one of the characters in the play.
Edie's final April, the Month of Marvin celebration featured a conversation with jazz singer and pianist Wayne Corelli, whom the late arranger, composer, and producer Bobby Scott mentored. Mr. Corelli provided Edie with invaluable information giving further clarity for her project Jazz in My Soul-a Marvin Gaye Fantasy.

Janis Gaye describes in her book "After the Dance" how Marvin repeatedly sang those songs to her. It turns out that Janis inspired Marvin to complete his Bobby Scott arrangements, which he had abandoned in 1968. She was his muse, and he poured his soul into those ballads, channeling his emotions and shaping those songs.
